Multicultural Czternastka

Hi! It's Benevolence group. Today we would like to write a few words about the place thanks to which we have a contact with multicultural society - our school. XIVLO is one of the best high schools in Poland. Here, students have a chance to participate in many international projects that are to let us get closer to foreign cultures. We have a number of exchange programmes, including trips to France, Germany, United Kingdom and the Netherlands. We are also supported while applying for a place in a semester (or a year) exchange programmes in the United States of America or in the Great Britain.

What is more we are taught by native speakers. As far as I am concerned, it is a great opportunity to both train the language and learn about foreign nations. It seems self-evident that in XIVLO English language is the most important but there are many other ones to choose - Spanish, French, Russian and - obligatory - German. Moreover, if there are more than 10 studens willing to start up a new language elective, there is a great possibility that the idea will come into being.

I have been here for almost four years. Since that time I believe I have acquired multicultural experience. Two years ago I was on exchange with the Dutch students. I had never been to the Netherlands before, so I thought it would be a fantastic trip. Indeed it was. After less than an hour a free conversation both with my new friend and his parent began - we discussed culture differences, political and economical conditions of our countries, all the time using only English. Being there for one week taught me a lot and I would love to come back there in the future

In XIVLO we are visited by many interesting people. One time we had an occasion to meet a Mexican and an Australian who came to Wrocław for a couple of weeks on an academic exchange. It was really nice to talk with them, some of us also in Spanish. We were also shown presentations about their countries, which I reckon were interesting. From time to time personages are invited to XIVLO for a little interview. This is a great change to meet and listen to many wonderful people and their stories. Not long ago we took part in a lecture delivered by professor Marcin Wodziński. The lecture was about history of Jews in Wrocław and the area. We were really impressed and even decided to place one of the mentioned spots on our multicultural map

Finally, what is unique, we run a special English-language project called The Classic Literature Days in English. Every year our students stage a well-known play in original. This year Romeo and Juliet has been chosen. Every eager student from junior high and high school may take part in a play, which later evolves into a piece of art and is staged in France! It is an extraordinary experience that gives you not only an opportunity to go to France, but also a chance to play in a classic foreign drama
